4,014. Serving While Seated

Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 5:17

If a kohein performs the service while seated, he profanes the service, which is invalidated. He is not subject to the penalty of lashes because the warning against doing so is inferred from a positive mitzvah. Similarly, a kohein who is involved with the service in any capacity must stand directly on the floor; If there’s anything between him and the floor, such as if he was standing on a utensil, an animal or another kohein’s foot, the service is invalidated. Likewise, if anything separated between his hand and the service vessel he was using, the service is invalidated.

Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 5:18

The service could only be performed with the right hand; service performed with the left hand is invalidated, though the kohein is not subject to the penalty of lashes. If one of a kohein’s feet was on a utensil and the other was on the floor, or if one was on a rock and the other was on the floor, we must examine: would he remain standing on one foot if the utensil or the rock was removed? If yes, then the service is valid; if not, then the service is invalid. If he received the blood of an offering with his right hand, using his left hand to support it, his service is valid. This is because we’re not concerned by something that is only a support.
