3,972. Teaching Torah Under the Influence

Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 1:4

One who is intoxicated is permitted to teach Torah – even halacha and midrash – so long as he doesn’t rule in a matter of law. A Torah scholar who regularly issues rulings may not teach Torah, as his teaching is considered a ruling.

Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 1:5

Let’s say that someone drank exactly a reviis of wine (about 3.3 ounces) and it was diluted with the smallest volume of water, or he slept a little, or he walked a mil (about six-tenths of a mile). In such a case, the wine will have worn off and he may serve in the Temple. However, if he drank more than a reviis, then dilution, napping or traveling add to his intoxication. In such a case, one must wait however long it takes to become completely sober.
