Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 6:2

Each week, the designated maamad would gather. Those who lived in or near Jerusalem would enter the Temple with that week’s watches of kohanim and Leviim. When their assigned week arrived, members of the maamad who lived far away would gather in their local shuls.

Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 6:3

Those who gathered, both in Jerusalem and elsewhere, would fast Monday through Thursday of their designated week. They didn’t fast on Friday out of respect for Shabbos, and they didn’t fast on Sunday so as not to go from the delight of Shabbos to fasting.
