#267: Drinking Melted Ice

1. We learned previously that Ashkenazim may not allow ice to melt and drink the melted water. However, Ashkenazim may place ice into a drink, allow it to melt there, and then consume the drink. In this case, the melted ice is not recognizable on its own (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 320:9 and Mishnah Berurah 320:35).

2. Poskim disagree as to whether one may drink the melted liquid from leftover ice in a bowl. If there is other water available, some say it is preferable to use the other water (Orchot Shabbat 4:43). If one’s original intent was to let the ice melt in order to drink it, all agree that it is forbidden (Ibid.).
