#266: Ice in a Drink

1. Poskim disagree whether one may crush ice that is already placed inside a drink. Some poskim permit this, while others forbid. It is best to be strict lechatchilah (Orchot Shabbat 4:41; Yalkut Yosef 320).

2. Some permit placing ice into an empty cup and then pouring a drink directly on top of it (R. Mordechai Eliyahu, Ma’amar Mordechai 4:83). Others recommend avoiding this, since in their opinion, this may constitute a violation of the prohibition to crush ice because the liquid causes the ice to melt directly. Instead, one should pour the drink first and then place the ice inside (Shabbat K’halachah 17:3; Piskei Teshuvot 320:14).
