#212: House Plants (Part 2)

1. Some poskim hold that houseplants are considered muktzeh and may never be moved on Shabbat (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 26:2). Others hold that they may be moved if doing so does not improve their growth since they are considered “decorations” (Tehilah L’dovid 336:6).

2. Even if one follows the lenient opinion (i.e., plants are not muktzeh) it is still recommended not to move houseplants on Shabbat, as some instances of moving it higher off the ground or closer to the ground may violate the melachah of planting or detaching on a rabbinic level (The 39 Melochos, p. 275).
