#208: Flowers in a Vase (Part 1)

1. It is forbidden rabbinically to cause flowers whose petals are not completely open to bloom further. Therefore, one may not place these types of flowers in water for the first time on Shabbat (Rema 336:11, Mishnah Berurah 336:54).

2. Ashkenazim may not fill a vase with water or add more water into a vase on Shabbat, though on Yom Tov it is permitted (Mishnah Berurah 336:54; Shulchan Aruch 654:1). By contrast, Sephardim may fill a vase with water or replace water in a vase on Shabbat, though one who acts stringently is praiseworthy (Yalkut Yosef 336:11; Yechaveh Da’at 2:53). We will discuss additional halachot involving placing flowers into a vase tomorrow.
