#207: Planting Seeds
1. The prohibition of planting applies to plants that grow indoors as well (though some maintain that the prohibition is rabbinic in nature; see Eglei Tal, Zore’a). Therefore, one may not plant seeds in a flowerpot on Shabbat, even if the pot is not perforated or placed on the ground (Aruch Hashulchan 336:6; Orchot Shabbat 18:14).
2. One may also not cause seeds, beans, or other shoots to sprout on Shabbat by watering them or placing them in a container of water or other location with moisture (Mishnah Berurah 336:51; The 39 Melochos, p. 278).
