#205: Water Fountains (Part 1)

1. It is prohibited to use an outdoor water fountain if the water is sprayed in a high arc and lands directly on grass or other vegetation, as this may violate the Torah prohibition of zore’a (planting) (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 26:7).

2. If the water first lands on the water fountain itself and then rolls down to the ground, it is permitted since the watering of the vegetation does not take place in a direct manner. The same would be true if it first lands on a sidewalk, an area with concrete, or an area with dirt alone (as discussed previously) and then rolls or trickles over to an area with vegetation (Ibid).
