#163: Eating Before Havdalah (Part 2)

  1. A child under bar or bat mitzvah age is permitted to eat or drink as needed before listening to Havdalah. Although the child is obligated to hear Havdalah (as was discussed in previous posts), the prohibition against eating prior to Havdalah was not imposed upon him or her (Mishnah Berurah 269:1).
  2. If one will be unable to recite or listen to Havdalah on Motzai Shabbat because no wine, grape juice, or other drink usable for Havdalah (chamar medinah) is available, or for any other reason, one should fast, if possible, until at least chatzot (halachic midday) on Sunday. If one will be unable to recite Havdalah by then, or one feels too weak to fast that long, one may eat after reciting “Baruch Hamavdil” (Shulchan Aruch, O.C., 299:3; Mishnah Berurah 299:19-21; see also https://outorah.org/p/77042/).
