#150: The Obligation of Women in Havdalah (Part 1)
- According to the Shulchan Aruch (O.C. 296:1), women are obligated in Havdalah. This is the position followed by Sephardim (Yalkut Yosef, O.C. 296:13). The Shulchan Aruch notes that some hold women are exempt. The Rema says that women should therefore preferably hear Havdalah from a man, to accommodate those opinions.
- Based on the ruling of the Rema, Ashkenazi women should ideally listen to Havdalah recited by a man. However, a woman who is unable to hear Havdalah from a man should recite it herself (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchata 58:17). We will elaborate further on this subject, G-d willing.
