#146: The End of Shabbat (Part 2)

  1. We learned yesterday that according to the most widely accepted opinion (that of the Vilna Gaon) nightfall (tzeit hakochavim) is shortly after sunset. Although in theory, this time could be as early as fifteen to twenty minutes after sunset, we are especially strict with regard to Shabbat and the actual time used for seeing three small stars is much later than this.
  2. According to the Vilna Gaon, the time of nightfall fluctuates based on the time of year and location. For this reason, many calendars currently calculate the end of Shabbat not as a set number of minutes after sunset, but rather as a time that fluctuates slightly based upon a certain number of degrees that the sun is located below the horizon in any location.
