#142: Obligation of Reciting Retzeh in Birkat Hamazon on Shabbat

  1. When reciting Birkat Hamazon on Shabbat, one is obligated to add “Retzeh,” the special paragraph added for Shabbat, immediately before the berachah of “Boneh Yerushalayim” (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 188:5).
  2. Both men and women who forget to recite Retzeh on Shabbat must repeat Birkat Hamazon from the beginning. Therefore, if one has already concluded the berachah of “Boneh Yerushalayim” and begun the words HaKel Avinu Malkeinu in the next berachah, one must return to the beginning of Birkat Hamazon and recite it again with Retzeh (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 188:6; Piskei Teshuvot 188:6).
