#136: The Mitzvah of Seudah Shelishit
- We have learned previously about the mitzvah to eat three meals on Shabbat. The third meal, known as seudah shelishit should be eaten on Shabbat afternoon sometime after six and a half halachic hours of the day (the earliest time to recite the Minchah prayer), which is currently approximately 12:40 p.m. in the New York area (but varies according to the time of year).
- One who eats seudah shelishit before the earliest time does not fulfill the mitzvah of having a third meal (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 291:2). However, the one exception to the rule may be when Erev Pesach falls on Shabbat. Some say one may rely on more lenient opinions and eat seudah shelishit even in the morning, while chametz is still permitted.
