#128: Oneg Shabbat and Foods to Eat at the Shabbat Meals (Part 2)

  1. According to the Gemara (Pesachim 105a), one should honor the Shabbat day meal more than the Shabbat night meal (see Aruch Hashulchan 289:2 for possible explanations). Therefore, one with limited delicacies should ideally save them for the day meal rather than serve them at night (Mishnah Berurah 271:9).
  2. Many delicacies that one serves at night cannot be served during the day due to restrictions concerning the laws of cooking and reheating on Shabbat, or because they will not taste as good. Therefore, one may fulfill the halacha of honoring the day meal more than the night meal with a special drink, dessert, or fruit (Aruch Hashulchan 271:9). This halacha may also be fulfilled by eating cholent on Shabbat day or a different type of dry chicken, such as schnitzel, or other foods specifically designated for the day meal.
