#119: Reciting Hamotzi and Distributing the Challah on Shabbat (Part 2)
- Many poskim maintain that the challah need only be covered during Kiddush and may be uncovered during Hamotzi. Some require that the challah be covered while reciting Hamotzi as well (Chayei Adam). According to the second opinion, one should hold the challot with one’s hands (as discussed in the previous post) underneath the challah cover (Mateh Ephraim).
- The one reciting Hamotzi on lechem mishneh should have in mind that the berachah extends to the others around the table as well. They, in turn, should have in mind to fulfill their obligation to recite a berachah on lechem mishneh with the one reciting the berachah. Furthermore, some recommend that the one reciting Hamotzi should say “bireshut” (with permission) before reciting the berachah as a sign of humility (Mishnah Berurah 274:2), while others maintain it is preferable not to say “bireshut” due to concerns of an interruption in between washing hands and Hamotzi (Vilna Gaon, Ma’aseh Rav 78).
