#104: Timing of the Shabbat Day Meal (Part 2)
- We mentioned yesterday that one must make sure to eat or drink something before chatzot on Shabbat. Some poskim are uncertain as to whether drinking water counts to remove the prohibition (Pri Megadim, Eishel Avraham 157:3). Others hold that drinking water is sufficient to remove the prohibition of not fasting (Aruch Hashulchan 288:1). One may rely on this opinion (Piskei Teshuvot 288). Accordingly, one may avoid the issue by simply drinking water before davening, even if one does not plan to recite Kiddush or eat lunch until after chatzot. Alternatively, one may accommodate both opinions by having a drink such as tea or coffee before davening, which are also generally permitted to drink (Mishnah Berurah 89:22).
- It was noted in a previous post that those women who generally recite a short tefillah (instead of reciting all of Shacharit) may not drink water or tea/coffee afterward, before hearing or reciting Kiddush.
