#101: Requirement of Three Meals on Shabbat (Part 1)

  1. There is a mitzvah to eat three meals on Shabbat, one at night, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon (Shabbat 117b, Rambam, Shabbat 30:9). Some hold that the mitzvah to eat three meals is a Torah-mandated mitzvah, or at least "Halacha L'Moshe M’Sinai," a tradition passed down from Moshe (Aruch Hashulchan 291:1). Others hold that the mitzvah is Rabbinic (Kol Bo 58).
  2. The Rambam writes that the meals should all be accompanied by wine. However, the accepted opinion today is that one may serve other drinks that one enjoys (Piskei Teshuvot 250:11).
