#98: Kiddush B'makom Seudah (Part 5)

  1. We mentioned yesterday that to fulfill Kiddush b’makom seudah, one must eat one's “meal” in the same location as the Kiddush. For this reason, one should not recite Kiddush in one room and then eat in a different room, or even in a different part of the first room. If one had in mind originally when hearing Kiddush that one planned to eat in a different room, it is permitted, but only if one can see the second room from the first room (Shulchan Aruch 273:1; Mishnah Berurah 2-4; Yalkut Yosef 273:4-6). Therefore, one should not listen to Kiddush on Shabbat morning in the sanctuary of the shul and then eat in the social hall if one cannot see the social hall from the sanctuary. Rather, one should recite or listen to Kiddush again in the social hall. Nevertheless, if one ate after hearing Kiddush in the sanctuary, one still fulfills the mitzvah of Kiddush after the fact, if one had in mind to switch locations (Mishnah Berurah 273:8).
  2. One may not recite or listen to Kiddush in one house or building and then move to a different house or building to eat, even if one intended to move. In cases of need, it may be permitted, but only if one can see from one location to the other (Mishnah Berurah 273:7, Yalkut Yosef 273:7)
