3,168. Supersized Sheaves

Hilchos Matnos Aniyim 5:17

Let’s say that all the sheaves are a kav in volume (about a half-gallon) and one sheaf if four kav. If that large sheaf is forgotten, it’s shich’cha. If it’s greater than four kav, it’s not shich’cha (because such an oversized sheaf would not be overlooked). Similarly, if all the sheaves are two kav in volume and one sheaf is greater than eight kav, shich’cha doesn’t apply to that sheaf.

Hilchos Matnos Aniyim 5:18

If someone forgets a sheaf that’s two seah in volume (about seven gallons), it’s not shich’cha. This is derived from Deuteronomy 24:19: “When you forget a sheaf in the field” – a sheaf, but not a pile. This applies even to sheaves of two seah (which are effectively piles). If someone forgets two sheaves that together are two seah in volume, shich’cha applies because each of them is less than two seah. The Rambam opines that shich’cha applies even if the two sheaves together contain more than two se'ah.
