3,878. Reverence for the Site of the Temple

Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 7:7

Even though the Temple is not currently standing, one must demonstrate proper reverence for its former location, the same as when it was standing. Therefore, one may only walk in an area where he would be allowed in the Temple. One may not sit in the location of the courtyard, nor may he act lightheaded opposite the place of the eastern gate. This is derived from Leviticus 19:30, which says, “You shall observe My sabbaths and revere My sanctuary.” The Sages explain that just like keeping Shabbos applies forever, the obligation to revere the Temple is likewise eternal. Even though the Temple is in ruins, its site retains its sanctity.

Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 7:8

When the Temple is standing, one may not behave in a lightheaded manner from Mt. Scopus – which is outside Jerusalem – and inward. This is only the case when one can see the Temple and there’s no fence between him and the Temple.
