Zeiya - Shared Oven
QUESTION: I cooked an open pan of chicken in the oven, and I baked a pan of vegetables on the rack above. What is the status of these vegetables? Are they fleishigs? Are they pareve?
ANSWER: Shulchan Aruch (YD 92:8) cites the Teshuvos HaRosh regarding a pan of milk that was placed in an oven directly under a pan of meat. He writes that the steam from the milk will rise and be absorbed into the pan of meat and the meat will be forbidden. In our case, we are not dealing with milk and meat, but the rule would be the same. The steam from the meat will rise and get absorbed into the pan of vegetables. According to some opinions, the vegetables should be considered as though they were cooked directly with meat. According to others, it would be as though the vegetables were baked in a fleishig pan. (These two opinions are discussed in Pischei Teshuva 95:1.) Either way, the vegetables should not be served with dairy.
