- Some look at their fingernails first and then recite (or listen to the head of the household recite) the berachah (Mishnah Berurah 296:31; Kaf Hachaim 298:45). Others reverse the order and recite the berachah first, before looking at the nails (Vilna Gaon; R. Moshe Feinstein, as cited in “The Radiance of Shabbos,” p.139).
- Some have the custom of turning off the electric lights in the room before the berachah is recited so that the flame alone provides sufficient illumination (Practice of R. Moshe Feinstein, as cited in “The Radiance of Shabbos,” p.138). Others do not have this practice.
