#120: Reciting Hamotzi and Distributing the Challah on Shabbat (Part 3)

  1. Based on a dream reported by Rav Ashi from King Menasheh (Sanhedrin 102b), the one reciting Hamotzi should ideally eat one of the end pieces of challah since these are considered the choicest parts of the challah since they are become baked first (Rema 167:3 and Mishnah Berurah 167:3). Even if one prefers a middle piece, some still maintain it is preferable to eat one of the corner pieces (Yalkut Yosef). Others suggest that the top or middle part of the challah may be the choicest and the one reciting Hamotzi should preferably take a piece from there (Shulchan Aruch Harav 167:4). Nevertheless, these suggestions are not absolutely required.
  2. It is permissible to rip pieces of challah with one’s hand if one prefers, rather than cut pieces with a knife (Mishnah Berurah 170:25). However, one should refrain from ripping pieces if family members or guests will feel uncomfortable with the practice (Shulchan Aruch 170:10,15).
