#110: Lechem Mishneh (Part 3)

  1. Halachic authorities disagree whether the loaves for lechem mishneh may be used when a small piece has broken off. Some maintain that they must be perfectly whole (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 55:8), while others say that if less than 1/48 is missing, it is acceptable (see Shaarei Teshuvah 274:1).
  2. Practically, one should try to use a loaf that is totally whole, but if needed, common practice is to allow using a loaf with a small piece missing that is not so noticeable (Piskei Teshuvot 274:9). This is especially relevant to challot in Israel, which are sometimes not sold in a bag or contain a crunchy crust, from which small pieces occasionally fall off.
