#107: Eating Bread on Shabbat (Part 2)

  1. We mentioned that one must eat ideally eat a k'beitzah of bread at the Shabbat meals. What should one who cannot eat challah with gluten do? The answer can be inferred from the Shulchan Aruch (288:2, 291:1), who writes that one does not need to eat on Shabbat if eating will cause him harm and distress rather than enjoyment. Accordingly, one would not be required to eat challah if it will cause him harm. Such a person can still fulfill the halacha of kiddush b'makom seudah by drinking a revi'it (or two if possible) of wine/grape juice, as was discussed in the postings on Kiddush.
  2. Many people who do not eat gluten can still eat oat products that are not contaminated. If this is an option, one should try to obtain oat bread or special matzot of this type and eat at least a minimum of a k'zayit of them. Moreover, some people can safely eat small amounts of gluten without negative reactions. Such individuals should eat a k’zayit of bread if possible (approximately 20 grams, or .67 ounces according to the more lenient opinions). For additional information, see here, here, and here.
